Lost Foam Process Provide Closer tolerance, better surface finish and no mismatch compared to conventional Green sand Process. It is a coreless process hence total elimination of fine and flashes on the casting is achieved. Products which have been keeping mind the lost foam process have dramatically reduced its machining cost as well as achieved lower casting weight, hence lower cost product.
Lost foam process is most suitable for intricate cored casting in high volume in any weight range to 150 gm to 300 kg per pc. That mines no limitation are in process.
Lost foam Process is similar to lost wax process. First a pattern in Expandable Polystyrene is produced which an exact replica of the desired is casting. Runner and riser are attached by hot melt adhesive to the EPS pattern (foam) and a tree is made of one or more number of foams. The tree is then coated in bath by dipping. And then tree is invested in a flask by sand and vibrated to compact the sand around the tree in the flask. Molten metal is poured in to the foam tree. The molten metal replaces the foam which gets evaporated. On solidification of metal of metal, the sand is drained off and the tree is removed from the flask. The castings are knocked out from the tree, fettled and finished before it is shipped out.
